Wondering how to be stylish? You don’t need to understand fashion to dress well. You don’t need to know what’s walking the runways in Paris, memorize designers, or spend your weekends studying street style. I’ve spent enough time around fashion to know that some of the best-dressed people you meet couldn’t tell you who designed their jacket. They just understand a few basic principles and apply them every single day.
If you have zero fashion sense, start here.

How To Be Stylish: The Cheat Code for Guys Who Think They Can’t Dress
1. Find Someone Stylish and Copy Them
Yes, I said copy them. Originality can come later.
Find two or three people whose style you consistently like, preferably people with a similar build to yours, and pay attention to how they dress. Back in high school, I copied the style of whoever was in the music videos I watched. If it was good enough for rappers, it was good enough for me. These days rappers dress more like anime characters than real people, so I wouldn’t recommend that specific playbook anymore. Find some cool people on Instagram instead and build your foundation from there.
Don’t worry about buying the exact pieces. Study the formula. How do their pants fit? What shoes do they pair with them? What colors keep showing up?
Do this long enough and you’ll start developing your own style, because you’ll finally understand why good outfits work instead of just copying them blindly.
2. Fit Comes Before Everything Else
If you remember one rule from this entire list, make it this one.
I would rather see you in a $20 T-shirt that fits beautifully than a $500 designer shirt that doesn’t. Your shoulders, your waist, your pant length, your overall proportions. All of that matters more than the name printed on the label.
And don’t confuse “fits” with “tight.” Clothes should complement your body, not fight it. You don’t want to look like your outfit is on the losing end of a World Star fight video. Do this and you’re on your way knowing how to be stylish.
3. Keep It Simple Until You Know What You’re Doing
Fashion beginners tend to make one of two mistakes: they don’t try at all, or they try way too hard.
Start simple. A great pair of jeans or trousers. Clean sneakers. Solid tees. A good hoodie. A versatile jacket. Neutral colors.
There’s nothing wrong with a simple outfit that fits well. Honestly, I’d take that over someone wearing six trends at once almost every single day.
4. Stop Buying Random Clothes
This is how you end up with a closet full of clothes and still feel like you have nothing to wear.
Before you buy something, ask yourself what you’re actually going to wear it with. Pro tip: make sure it pairs well with at least three other things you already own. If you can’t answer that, put it back.
I’m not interested in whether a piece looks good hanging on a rack. I want to know whether it makes your wardrobe better. I own a couple of pieces I can only wear with one specific thing, and it’s genuinely not fun getting dressed around them.
5. Let One Piece Do the Talking

You don’t need interesting pants, loud sneakers, a graphic shirt, a statement jacket, a hat, jewelry, and a bag all competing for attention at once.
Pick your star.
Maybe it’s the jacket. Maybe it’s a beautiful pair of sneakers. Maybe it’s the pants. Build the rest of the outfit around whatever that piece is. I own a pair of sneakers with wings on them, and every time I wear them, they’re the star of the show. One statement looks intentional. Five statements look like you’re trying to prove something.
6. Learn the Cheat Code: Shape, Color, and Texture
When an outfit feels boring, I look at three things: shape, color, and texture.
If the colors are simple, an interesting silhouette can carry the outfit. If the silhouette is basic, color can make it interesting. And if you’re wearing simple shapes and neutral colors, texture becomes your friend. Think suede, denim, leather, wool, knitwear, or a heavyweight cotton tee.
You don’t need all three at once. To know how to be stylish you just need enough visual interest to make the outfit feel considered instead of accidental.
7. Build a Wardrobe Where Almost Everything Works Together
This is where getting dressed actually becomes easy.
Your jeans should work with several shirts. Your jackets should work with several pants. Your sneakers should work with most of your wardrobe.
You want to reach the point where you can grab a pair of pants, a shirt, and a jacket without spending thirty minutes figuring out whether they belong together.
Build your core around basics and versatile colors. This matters most when you’re starting out. You’re building a system, not collecting clothes.
8. Develop Your Eye
If you think you have no fashion sense, buying random clothes isn’t going to fix that. You need references first.
Spend time looking at Pinterest, Instagram, brand lookbooks, magazines, and stylish people you see in real life. Save every outfit you genuinely like.
After a while, you’ll notice patterns. Maybe you keep saving baggy jeans. Maybe it’s workwear jackets, minimal sneakers, monochromatic outfits, or vintage denim. That’s your taste starting to reveal itself.
Once you know what you like, shopping gets a whole lot easier.
The Real Secret to Know How To Be Stylish.
Style isn’t something you’re born with. It’s something you learn.
You develop your eye. You learn your proportions. You figure out what actually works on your body. Eventually, you stop copying other people’s outfits entirely, because you’ve developed enough taste to build your own.
Until then, follow the rules. They’ll keep you out of trouble and in no time you’ll know how to be stylish even if you can’t dress.
